CNN —For the first time, the US Preventive Services Task Force has recommended screening for anxiety in children 8 and older. In its final recommendations, published Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA, the task force also urged screening for depression in children 12 and older, consistent with recommendations from 2016. The members considered recommendations on screening for suicide risk in children and adolescents but said there’s not enough evidence on its harms and benefits. Last month, the task force posted draft recommendations that for the first time said adults under 65 be screened for anxiety. “It is not coincidental that the USPSTF considered evidence for suicide and depression screening in the same updated Evidence Report and Systematic Review,” he wrote.

CNN —People who got the Covid-19 vaccine reported slightly longer menstrual cycles, but the change was temporary, according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Medicine. “We found no differences in menses length in any group of vaccinated individuals, compared with the unvaccinated cohort,” the study says. The changes to the length of the cycle didn’t remain in the cycle after vaccination, the authors said – apart from in the group that received two doses in one cycle. For the vaccinated cohort, they looked at three prevaccine cycles and at least the first Covid-19 vaccine dose cycle. Nearly two-thirds of the 15,000 vaccinated participants had received the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, although participants had also received the Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines among others.

(CNN) Younger children could soon be eligible to receive an updated Covid-19 booster shot. Pfizer and BioNTech on Monday said they completed their submission to the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization of their updated Covid-19 booster for children ages 5 through 11. Moderna on Friday said it had requested FDA authorization for its updated booster for adolescents ages 12 to 17 and for children ages 6 to 11. Like the boosters that became available for older people earlier this month, these bivalent boosters target the original coronavirus strain as well as the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 subvariants. Pfizer's updated booster is currently authorized for use in people 12 and older and Moderna's is authorized for adults age 18 and older.

Screening tools already availableThe anxiety recommendation would apply to adults 19 and older who do not have a diagnosed mental health disorder. The statements are for anxiety screening in adults over the age of 65 and for screening of suicide risk in adults. The task force members also hope the recommendations will elevate awareness about the need for mental health screening and treatment. "We would like people to be honest, to provide their input and perspectives," Pbert said, adding that the task force will read every comment.

(CNN) The death toll from Covid-19 is "both a profound tragedy and a massive global failure at multiple levels," the Lancet Covid-19 Commission said in a report Wednesday. "Too many governments have failed to adhere to basic norms of institutional rationality and transparency, too many people -- often influenced by misinformation -- have disrespected and protested against basic public health precautions, and the world's major powers have failed to collaborate to control the pandemic," the commissioners wrote. The World Health Organization says there have been more than 6.4 million Covid-19 deaths reported as of Sunday, but some experts say the actual toll most likely dwarfs the reported number. The Lancet Commission report is addressed to UN member states, UN agencies and others, including the G20 and G7. The commission specified that it is not "an investigative group, nor a body of biomedical specialists," but it focused on science-based policy, global cooperation and international finance in order to propose "guideposts for strengthening the multilateral system to address global emergencies and to achieve sustainable development."

CNN —The world has never been in a better position to end the Covid-19 pandemic, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, said in a news briefing in Geneva on Wednesday. “Last week, the number of weekly reported deaths from Covid-19 was the lowest since March 2020,” he said. “We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic. The United States reported the highest number of weekly deaths followed by Japan, Russia, Brazil and the Philippines. Overall, there have been more than 6.4 million deaths reported globally as of September 11.
